Tom Gabel: Reaktionen auf seine Geschlechtsumwandlung
Tom Gabel, Sänger von Against Me!, gab gestern bekannt, künftig als Frau weiter Leben zu wollen - was ihm vorwiegend Anerkennung und Respektbekundungen von vielen Musikerkollegen einbrachte.
„So incredible brave„, twitterten am gestrigen Abend Tegan and Sara, nachdem Tom Gabel von Against Me! öffentlich gemacht hatte, dass er sich einer Geschlechtsumwandlung unterziehen und künftig als Frau weiterleben wolle. Und auch von vielen anderen Seiten kamen anerkennende Worte für die Entscheidung Gabels und seinen Mut, sich der Öffentlichkeit mit seinem Entschluss zu stellen. So schrieb Toxic Breed: „Nothing but support for Tom Gabel on his decision to become a woman.“ Und die Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation meinte: „Tom’s decision to live life authentically is a not only a personal step forward, but one that will advance the national discussion about treating transgender people with fairness.“
Auch The Gaslight Anthem bekundeten ihren Respekt und machten darauf aufmerksam, wie viel Mut auch heutzutage ein solches Outing noch erfordere. „So Tom’s gonna be Laura now… and in 2012 I still find people on the internet commenting on another persons life how they insult and condemn a person for his choices. This is one of the hardest decisions a person can make. From my limited understanding of the subject, it means feeling your whole life like you were born in the wrong skin. That’s something that 99% of us can’t understand. Weither you agree or don’t, it’s not your life. It’s not your family. it’s not your band, it’s theirs. I don’t see the AM! guys very often, or if at all, but I always wish them well. They’re a great band. Leave it at that. Just let them be a great band.“
Und auch I Am The Avalanches-Sängerin Vinnie Caruana machte deutlich, dass es sich für sie um eine persönliche Entscheidung handle, die jeden Respekt verdiene und die Öffentlichkeit eben nur die Musik angehe: „My Opinion on Tom Gabel: Good Songwriter.„
Wer Interesse an diesem Thema hätte „should take a few minutes to watch this amazing video“ schrieben Circa Survive mit einem Hinweis auf „Got Monsters“ von Mina Caputo. Caputo, vorher bekannt als Keith Caputo, hatte sich im vergangenen Jahr ebenfalls zu dem Schritt entschlossen, sich einer Geschlechtsumwandlung zu unterziehen und das Thema in dem Song „Got Monsters“ und dem dazugehörigen Video verarbeitet. Tom Gabel selbst twitterte heute morgen Dank an Caputo: „You have been such an inspiration to me. Thank you.“
