RYKADA PARASOL
TOP 10-ALBEN
1. Black Love by the Afghan Whigs
Psychological, malicious, and self-destructive. This album plays out like film noir. This is heroin to me. One of the best concept albums of all time right down to the artwork.
2. The Velvet Underground & Nico, by Velvet Underground
So what if they were sloppy? The secret was their dopey and laid back vibe. Raw is real.
3. Strange Days, The Doors
Transcendental and narcotic. The Doors cultivated a more sophisticated aesthetic than their hippie counterparts. Their mood is still something I look to for inspiration.
4. Henry's Dream, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
This is one of my favorite Nick Cave albums because the stories are so darkly involved. It's like Brothers Grimm read out loud. It's extremely dramatic and cinematic in all the best ways.
5. Monsieur Gainsbourg Originals, Serge Gainsbourg.
Serge is the sexiest bitch whoever walked the earth. He's probably the reason why I'm studying French and will soon take up smoking.
6. Fire of Love, the Gun Club
How to make southern gospel while still have the soul of a punk? Gun Club is lesson #1.
7. Take it from the Man, by the Brian Jonestown Massacre
The only album of theirs you need. Simplistic, yet heartfelt. Despite Antone's infamy and mental illness, if you lived in LA or San Francisco in the late 90s, this was the local band that was driving a new subculture.
8. Fear of a Black Planet, Public Enemy
Sonically, lyrically, and politically provocative. I think rap has had a major influence on me in ways you'd not expect. For starters the message comes first, the delivery second, then singing. Your truth is potent. There are bits of vocalization throughout the album that make the meaning so much more intense like the dragged words in "Polywancracka". Powerful.
9. American II, Johnny Cash
Of all the America series this is probably my favorite. Purity of song often inspires me. If it sounds good simply arranged it will only be that more powerful with a big band.
10. This is Hardcore, Pulp
OK - I almost put REM here, but opted for the sleazy "walk-of-shame" feeling you get from Pulp instead. Man's downfall never sounded so good.
The 10 Songs I call soul music:
1. Debonair, the Afghan Whigs
I am thankful I never dated Greg Dulli. If one is to be an artist, then one should experience a tumultuous love at least once in their life. If you can't do that, then just listen to this song.
2. These Days, Nico
This is an eloquent poem. A heavy look back on life. The ending is the hardest part - it hits very close to home.
3. The Ship Song, Nick Cave
Nick is the only guy who can remind me of what it feels like to be deeply in love. Sometimes I want to tell him to knock it off.
4. Jolene, Dolly Parton
I was very little when I first heard this song. It made me want to be a songwriter. Only, I wanted to sing from Jolene's point of view.
5. Inside Looking Out, the Animals
The Animals are incredibly underrated band. I learned to belt and wail from singing along to this song. It's ferocious.
6. Ladies and Gentleman We're Floating in Space, Spiritualized
I remember the first time I heard this. Someone put the song on to help me go to sleep, but it did exactly the opposite. I think I got up and replayed it ten times. It was so beautiful that I blame it for the insomnia I had the whole week.
7. Ol' Man River, Judy Garland
Judy was a rock star. I don't understand how a little white woman can sing about picking cotton, but damn if she doesn't make you believe it.
8. Johanna, Iggy Pop
Not one of his best-known songs, but still one of my favorites. Iggy crawls and snarls. A song for meat eaters.
9. The Sound of Silence, Simon & Garfunkel
"In Restless Dreams I walk Alone". Descriptive, introspective, and bleak. Just my cup of tea.
10. Tainted Love, Gloria Jones
An exorcism of bad love. If you stomp your feet and shake your hips you will soon be rid of the demons.
